Orthotics can be divided into 2 types.

functional: The orthoses place the feet into normal or desirable
functional postures so that the body can weightbear
and ambulate in the least injurious and most
efficient posture. The principle being that bones
aligned properly allow for optimal mechanical advantage
of the related musculature. The appropriate orthoses
would fall into rigid and semi-rigidmaterials.

accommodative:

This style of orthoses "relieves" stress on feet that
are relatively "fixed" and immovable. As an example
some arthritic conditions, possibility rheumatoid arthritis,
requires an orthosis which relieves prominent and painful joints.

The appropriate orthoses would be flexible and semi-flexible materials.
Therapeutic and orthopedic footwear is footwear designed to assist in
accommodating specifically shaped feet. It can be extra wide, extra
deep, high heeled, flared for stability, rockered for forward ambulation.
This can be either a stock item, a stock item which we modify or a completely
custom made shoe or boot.
